Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Autobiography of a West Point graduate and professional US Army officer. He recalls his training in West Point, the different assignments after being commissioned to the Corps of Engineers, and arrival in the Philippines in late 1941, just prior to the war. He was assigned Commanding General of the 61st Division, Philippine Army, mobilized in the island of Panay. He writes of the condition of his division at the start of the war (lacking weapons, equipment and training), and provides details of the defense of the Philippines from the Panay and Cebu, and also how the Visayas tried to supply the beleaguered soldiers on Bataan and Corregidor by providing food and supplies. He also took over as governor of Panay, ruffling local officials' feathers and earning President Quezon's ire. He details his having to surrender his command and becoming a prisoner of war, then skims through his prisoner of war experience, liberation and return home after the war. Bellamy Park was in Columbus Barracks in Ohio, where his army father was assigned to when Chynoweth was growing up; it held many fond memories for him.
