Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of a US Army medical officer in the defense of the Philippines and through prison camp life. Gaskill was a surgeon in Fort Stotsenburg at the outbreak of war, and saw the Japanese attack on Clark Field. He was moved to Bamban and other locations as the Japanese landed, and then became I Corps surgeon during the siege of Bataan. He describes the defense briefly, and goes into more detail as a doctor treating prisoners of war in Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, Bilibid, prison ship to Taiwan; another hell ship to Japan, where he was forced to work in a mine for Mitsubishi. He criticizes some of the officers in camp with him as pulling their weight to get better food and treatment. As a medical officer, Gaskill is able to comment authoritatively on the health conditions of the prisoners of war he was with. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
