Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - The author married an American mining engineer, Bob Shrek, in 1936 and lived near Baguio for four years before the war; they had one son. When the war broke out, they evacuated to Manila and Bob enlisted in the Army. He was captured, forced on the Death march and died in one of the hell ships bound for Japan. Margaret and her son were interned with other American and allied civilians in Santo Tomas Internment Camp, where she met Jerry Sams, who assisted her in surviving the difficulties in camp. Eventually they fell in love, albeit a taboo relationship at the time; she gave birth to Jerry's daughter there. In 1944, they were moved to Los BaƱos, and were liberated in the dramatic air and ground raid on the camp in 1945. Both survived the war and were repatriated to the US. They got married in 1946. This honest memoir narrates Margaret's experiences from the time she arrived in the Philippines in 1936 until repatriation after the war. Editor Bloom has provided detailed annotations and an introduction which provides the memoir's background. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
