Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Supposedly a true story of an American soldier who served with MacArthur's forces in the South Pacific, was captured by the Japanese and kept in a prison camp in Leyte along with several Australian prisoners of war. Details inhuman treatment not only by the Japanese, but also among the prisoners themselves. Douglas Valentine told his story to his son, Douglas Valentine, Jr., who wrote the book, essentially as he heard it and written from his father's perspective. The author claims that the army expunged the prison camp's records due to military secrecy, but surviving veterans and locals do not confirm the existence of such a camp at all. It is thus hard to determine how much of this book is fact and how much is fiction. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
