Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Account of Private First Class John Allen McCarty, a New Mexican who was part of the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), sent to the Philippines on the eve of the war. Assigned to protect Clark Field, and later Bataan, from enemy aircraft, the 200th was surrendered in Bataan in April 1942. McCarty survived the Death March, Camp O'Donnell, and later, Cabanatuan prison camp. He was a victim of Japanese brutalities and was placed in the Zero Ward in the camp hospital - the doctors did not expect him to survive. But survive he did, to be liberated by the Rangers in January 1945. Most of his fellow New Mexicans did not. The author, who persuaded McCarty to tell his story, intersperses McCarty's own words with his own experiences in revisiting the places where McCarty had been during the war. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
