Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Researched work documenting the lives and heroic work of thirty-seven US Army and Navy chaplains and one Jewish cantor in Bataan, Corregidor and in prisoner of war camps. Each individual is described, based on correspondence, diaries, awards. Of the thirty-eight men of God identified in this book, twenty died in POW camps or in the hell ships transporting the POWs to Japan. All maintained their faith and strength in ministering to soldiers in combat or as POWs. Many of those who survived rose to become pillars in their respective professions, such as Robert Preston Taylor, who became the chief chaplain of the US Air Force and a Major General. Among those who died, the legendary feats lived on. William T. Cummings, who died in the hell ship Oryoku Maru, is credited with the saying, "There are no atheists in foxholes." The author's brother served with the 59th Coast Artillery Regiment in Corregidor. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
