| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Reminiscences by a US Army doctor who was assigned to the Philippines in 1940. When the war broke out, he was a battalion surgeon with the 45th Infantry Regiment (Philippine Scouts), later being promoted to regimental surgeon. This book narrates Donovan’s experiences in Bataan, evacuation to Corregidor, then as a POW. He mentions the case of David Provoo, an American who turned traitor and aided the Japanese at the expense of American POWs. Donovan details his ordeals under the Japanese at Bilibid, a Camp #8 in Manila, hell ship Haro Maru to Taiwan, where he was liberated in 1945. This book was written from interviews conducted by Donovan’s daughters (the book’s editors), with additional information gathered through research. One chapter is devoted to the story of Donovan’s wife in the US during the war, separated from her husband but trying all means to find out where and how he was. Dr. Donovan’s post-war deposition on the atrocities committed on hell ship Harõ Maru is appended. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
