| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Personal account of a teenage girl working in Manila when the war started. Born in Legazpi of Greek descent but of British citizenship, Ms. Wetmore was working in the Benguet Consolidated Mining Company office in Manila's Port Area. The first Japanese bombings were aimed at this area, and the memoir describes the effect of the bombings; the situation in Manila as the war took a turn for the worse, the arrival of the Japanese and internment in Santo Tomas. She writes in detail about life in Santo Tomas, falling in love and enjoying dances, while also experiencing emotional ups and downs with uncertainty and anxiety. She narrates the excitement at the first American air raid, news of MacArthur's return, and the liberation of the camp. The man she had grown to love, a married American, returned to his family; as a British subject she, her mother and sisters left for the US only after most of the other internees did. Ms. Wetmore's story has an unexpected happy ending. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
