| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Personal account of a U.S Army doctor, beginning with his medical training in the US. A reserve officer, he was called to active duty in 1940, and sent to the Philippines, arriving in February 1941. He writes about Manila and the Sternberg Hospital before the war, and how the tranquil peacetime life was destroyed by the advent of war. From Sternberg, Bumgarner was sent to Hospital No. 2 in Bataan, where he served until the surrender. The Japanese kept the hospital there for a few months, after which Bumgarner and the other hospital staff were moved to Bilibid and then Cabanatuan. In early 1944, he was moved to Bilibid and then by hell ship Enoura Maru to Japan, where he was when the war ended. Bumgarner received the Bronze Star for his medical work in Bataan. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
