Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Creative nonfiction account of Maj. Gen. Valdes during the Second World War. Valdes was the Chief of Staff of the Philippine Army in 1941; with the establishment of the USAFFE, he virtually lost his command to Gen. MacArthur. This account, based on the wartime diaries and recollections of persons who knew Gen. Valdes, recounts the general's experiences from December 8, 1941, focusing on his reaction to the war, accompanying Quezon and representative officials of the Commonwealth government to Corregidor. Particular attention is given to the evacuation of Quezon and his party from Corregidor to the Visayas, by submarine, and later, to Mindanao (by PT boat) and then to Australia and the US, to set up the government in exile. The narrative becomes skimpy at this point, sketching out Valdes' activities in the US, and finally, his return to the Philippines in 1944 with MacArthur, reunion with his family in 1945. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
