| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Gordon enlisted in the US Army in 1940, and was sent to the Philippines to become a member of the 31st Infantry Regiment, US Army, in Manila. A personal account, Gordon narrates his life in the army, conditions in the Philippines before the war (including homosexuality in the army) and highlights the fighting in Bataan, before going into the Death March and prison camp life. Gordon was sent to Japan relatively early: he was sent by ship on November 1942, before the "hell ships." Critical not only of the Japanese, but also Americans who betrayed their men. Appendices include maps of the death march, POW camps, rosters of prisoners, West Point graduates who died in the defense of the Philippines or as prisoners of war, photos of survivors and war memorials relating to the Philippines and prisoners of war. Gordon was a pro-active veteran, airing criticism regarding inaccuracies in books and TV documentaries; he was actively involved in the veterans organization "The Battling Bastards of Bataan," until his death. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
