Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of the defense of the Philippines in 1941-1942, focusing on the US Air Corps side of the campaign. The author was an Army Air Corps intelligence officer later attached to MacArthur's staff, and was an eyewitness to the last-minute preparations to build up the US air strength in the Philippines before the war. The narration, journalistic in tone (Ind was a journalist before he joined the Air Corps), becomes an almost daily chronicle when the defense campaign reached its peak. He got out on one of the last planes to leave Bataan and Mindanao, and made it to Australia (where he continued to work in MacArthur's staff; his experiences are continued in his next book, "Allied Intelligence Bureau"). (Col. Ind wrote this book while he was with MacArthur assisting the guerrillas in occupied Philippines). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
