Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Biography of the general MacArthur left behind to command Filipino and American troops in the Philippines in 1942, and who had to surrender Corregidor. The author, a popular American military historian, is sympathetic to Wainwright and focuses on Wainwright's experiences from 1940 to 1945. Wainwright arrived in the Philippines on his second tour of duty in 1940, was given command of the North Luzon Force in late November 1941, and commanded the I Philippine Corps in Bataan. When MacArthur left Corregidor for Australia, Wainwright was made commander of the US Army Forces in the Philippines in Corregidor. He was forced to surrender Corregidor and its satellite forts when the Japanese invaded it; he also ordered other Fil-Am forces still fighting in Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao to surrender, lest the Japanese kill the harbor defense garrison. Schultz describes Wainwright's experiences as a prisoner of war; he and other senior officers were taken to Taiwan soon after the surrender and later brought to Mukden, Manchuria, where he stayed until liberated by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) agents in 1945. The biography ends with Wainwright's experiences after the war. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
