Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Saga of the US Army Air Force in the Philippines and immediate surroundings, including the Netherlands East Indies and Australia, during the first six months of war in the Pacific. The first half of the book deals with the 12th-hour reinforcement of the Philippines, situation at the start of the war, and early air operations in the Philippines (including the disastrous results by the Japanese raids on Clark Field and other air bases) until the withdrawal to Bataan. The second half focuses on the desperate defense of Java, with side glances at operations in the Philippines and Australia. Written shortly after the war, the book tapped an impressive array of sources, some of which are no longer available today. Edmonds takes on a dispassionate view, trying to establish what happened rather than place blame. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
