Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - The saga of Captain Al Hernandez, executive officer of the ISRM team from Australia which landed in Mindoro in 1944, to serve as the eyes and ears of MacArthur and provide information which would help MacArthur decide when and where to land in the Philippines. Hernandez' team was led by Lt. Commander George F. Rowe, a reserve naval officer and pre-war Manila broker. The team sent to Mindoro in 1943 had been attacked by the Japanese and its leader killed, while the members were scattered. The importance of the Mindoro position was that it was close enough to observe Japanese vessels entering and leaving Manila Bay; it was close enough to Manila to send agents to obtain detailed information on Japanese strengths. Hernandez told his story to Earle, who dutifully wrote it down. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
