Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Journalistic account of Lt. Donald D. Blackburn, an American officer who arrived in the Philippines in late October 1941. Assigned as advisor to the 11th Division, Philippine Army, he encountered difficulties in preparing his unit for war; it broke during the Japanese landings in Lingayen and Blackburn had to seek roundabout ways to rejoin his division in Bataan. Rather than surrender, he joined his co-officer, Lt. Col. Russell Volckmann, in escaping the Death March, evading the Japanese and surviving in the jungles. He helped organize Igorot guerrillas (headhunters) in northern Luzon. Volckmann became commander of the US Armed Forces in the Philippine Islands - North Luzon (USAFIP NL), and Blackburn was made commander of the 11th Infantry Regiment. This account details the guerrilla resistance movement in Northern Luzon, its success and failures, its difficulties and joys. Quotes heavily from Blackburn's diary. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
