Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Classic scholarly study by an American scholar on the issue of Filipino political collaboration during the Japanese occupation. Apart from documenting the activities of key Filipinos such as Laurel, Vargas and other members of the Executive Commission and the Japanese-sponsored Philippine Republic, Steinberg goes deeper and tries to analyze their actions and the post-war People's Court trials. Steinberg also looks into the motives of Americans involved, including MacArthur and American Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes, who intervened and in many ways muddled the issue. Based on a variety of published and unpublished sources, as well as interviews with key individuals, this book is indispensable for anyone studying the collaboration controversy; it has set a standard which has not yet been surpassed. The work was based on the author's doctoral dissertation. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
