Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - A personal account of the defense of the Philippines, 1941-1942 from a different perspective: Weiss, who enlisted in the US Army at the age of 17 (he lied about his age), was a radio operator assigned to the 10th Signal Service Company in Manila. With the outbreak of war, he was assigned to a Philippine merchant ship, the Don Esteban, which was taken by the army to take supplies from the south (Cebu and Mindoro) to Bataan. The ship was sunk by Japanese planes in northern Mindoro, and Weiss together with his fellow crew members travelled around the Visayas seeking further duty. With the fall of Bataan, the Don Esteban headed south, towards the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia today), on a sailboat, but was captured in the Netherlands East Indies and imprisoned in the POW camp in Ambon Island. First edition of the book was published in 1992; this is the second, revised edition, published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
