Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Researched account of the Japanese military police (the Kempeitai) and their operations in the Philippines to crush anti-Japanese sentiment. The Kempeitai was notorious for using extreme torture methods and were a byword during the Japanese occupation; this is the first detailed study in English looking into the context of the organization, some of its individuals, and the experiences of those who survived the tortures. Originally a master's thesis in history at the University of the Philippines, this work brings together existing material as well as heretofore unused documents, including the personal memoir of a Japanese former Kempeitai. Provides lists of Japanese Kempeitai in various parts of the Philippines, as well as biographical notes on some individuals. The author is the daughter of a World War II Bataan veteran and professional army officer, from which she derived inspiration. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
