| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - For several years, this book was the standard reference on Japanese war crimes in World War II. Based largely on testimony and evidence presented at the Tokyo War Crimes Trial, and concentrating on atrocities committed against British subjects, the book also mentions the Bataan Death March, atrocities against Chinese and Javanese, cannibalism, medical experiments, crimes against civilians and prisoners of war, crimes against allied seamen, and the Kempeitai (military police).
The author also tries to explain why the atrocities occurred, looking into Japanese history and tradition, and examines the war crimes trials conducted by the Allies after the war. Not yet reported is the case of comfort women, which was not tackled in any of the war crimes trials against Japanese military personnel.
The author was Deputy Judge Advocate General for the British Army of the Rhine, and was involved in hearing German war crimes; this book serves as a companion volume to his earlier work on German atrocities, "Scourge of the Swastika." - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
