- Summary, etc. - Graphic, courageous attempt by a Japanese to set down on paper the atrocities of World War II in the Philippines, from Japanese and Filipino sides. Interviewing Japanese (without prior notice) and Filipinos, Ishida narrates a selection of the stories he recorded, focusing on the massacres in Laguna (Tanauan, Calamba, Los Baños, Bai, San Pablo), and in Batangas (Lipa, Taal and Bauan). Ishida includes tales of comfort women, massacre survivors and perpetrators. Due to sensitive nature of Japan, the Japanese veterans' names and their units are changed to protect the Japanese interviewees. The Japanese try to rationalize why they acted the way they did during the war; Filipinos ask and try to explain the same incidents. Ishida is very critical of the Japanese for their amnesia and refusal to speak the truth. He ends with the ironies of Japanese memorials in the Philippines and their failure to apologize. This work was originally written in Japanese ("Warangu Hiya" [Walang Hiya, or Without Shame] was the title of the Japanese edition, published in 1990. A US edition was also published). Ishida himself uses a pen name to protect himself from Japanese rightists; he was a teenager during the war and drafted into the Japanese Navy in the last year of war. Since then he has tried to document Japan's atrocities in the war. Translators of this book are: Makiko OKUYAMA-VENTURA, Reynald VENTURA, and SATOSHI MASUTANI. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
