Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - First published in 1962, with several reprints in pocketbook format, this book remains the classic and most analytical study of the Death March which followed the surrender of Bataan in 1942. Falk provides a detailed and graphic description of the march in its various phases, as well as the massacre of Filipinos at Pantingan River. He writes of the tortures and killing which took place, giving specific incidents; narrates the torment of the Filipino and American prisoners of war in the inhuman train trip from San Fernando to Capas. Falk ends with the arrival of the POWs at Camp O'Donnell, and then concludes with an analysis of the causes and effects which led to the atrocities committed in the death march. He concludes that the inhumanity of the Japanese resulted from a failure of leadership - inaction at the top to stop the maltreatment. Dr. Falk used a variety of primary sources, including documents and testimony in the war crimes trial of Gen. Masaharu Homma (commander of the Japanese forces in the Philippines at that time); diaries, official reports. Dr. Falk was a member of the research team which produced the US Army in World War II series (he worked with Dr. Louis Morton in the "Fall of the Philippines") and thus was in a unique position to have access to these sources. This book is based on Dr. Falk's M.A. History thesis; in published form, the footnotes were taken out to make it easier to read. The book contains a critical review of sources, and an appendix provides the Japanese chain of command in April 1942. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
