General Note
  • General note - This book was published before World War II was over; hence, most names and details about the escape route and methods are omitted for military reasons. It does contain some information about Japanese brutalities. - Roderick Hall
Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of an American fighter pilot, on the defense of the Philippines and missions flown against the Japanese; surrender of Bataan, the Death March and the horrors of prison camp life under the Japanese in Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan and Davao. Dyess was one of those who escaped from Davao in 1943, was aided by Filipino guerrillas and evacuated by submarine to Australia. Dyess, along with his co-escapees (Melvin McCoy, Stephen Mellnick). Dyess' account of the Death March was the first news of the atrocity to reach MacArthur and the US, but Washington sat on the story until early 1944, when portions of this book appeared as a series of articles. When the book was published, Dyess had perished in an aircraft accident. Graphic and a classic eyewitness account. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
