| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Powerful memoir by an American medical student drafted into the US Army, arriving in Manila just a month and a half before the start of the war. Literary in quality, this memoir describes Manila under Japanese bombardment, conditions in Bataan, and particularly the experiences of American prisoners of war, from the Death March through prison camps (Camp O'Donnell, Davao Penal Colony), and back to Luzon and the infamous hell ship Oryoku Maru. This is one of the more vivid accounts of the war and the horrors of prison camp life, and the Oryoku Maru tragedy (although he does not specifically name the ship). Originally published in French (Stewart went to France to study and write there), this book became a bestseller in Europe before it was published in English. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
