Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account by a medical doctor who was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and sent to the Philippines in mid-1941. He writes of his experiences as an army doctor in Bataan (he was with the 31st Infantry Regiment, US Army), treating the wounded. After the surrender, he remained with the hospital staff and some patients in Bataan, Bilibid and finally Cabanatuan. Dr. Hibbs was one of those liberated by the Ranger raid on Cabanatuan in January 1945. Gives much praise to Pilar Campos, who supplied much aid to the prisoners of war and was killed by the Japanese for it (Hibbs describes her as his lover, but she was helping all the POWs and not just Hibbs). Reliable for details on medical subjects, but not so for subjects outside his specialty; e.g., ordnance. Many misspellings and other errors, especially where he discusses events he did not see first hand. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
