General Note
  • General note - "By a survivor of the Bataan Death March." POW is a personal memoir of the fall of the Philippines to the Japanese, the Bataan Death March and 3½ years as a prisoner of war... remarkable for its clarity and sensitivity, rich with description and feeling. - Roderick Hall
Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - This is a personal account by a member of the ground crew of the 17th Pursuit Squadron, US Army Air Corps. Czerwien arrived in the Philippines in 1940 and thus was able to savor the pre-war life in Manila and environs; he was at Nichols Field when the war began, was moved to Bataan to fight as infantry, surrendered on orders of Gen. King, and went on the Death March. He briefly discusses his experiences at the start of the war and early operations, then focuses on the Death March and his POW experiences (Camp O'Donnell, labor detail at Clark Field; hell ship to Japan, liberation in September 1945). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
