| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Detailed and popularly written military history of the 11th Airborne Division and the raid to liberate over 2000 Allied internees behind Japanese lines in Los Baños in February 1945. Details the life of the internees inside the camp, the role played by Filipino guerrillas and the actual execution of the plan, a joint aerial assault and surprise land raid, including the evacuation of the internees by amphibian tractors across Laguna de Bay to the safety of New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa. Gen. Flanagan also includes the aftermath of the raid: the return of the enraged Japanese and the massacre of Filipino residents in Los Baños as retaliation. The author was an officer of the 11th Airborne Division but did not participate directly in the raid (he was leading his unit to contain the Japanese in Fort McKinley, thereby providing support to the raiding force). He based this book on official reports, interviews and correspondence with American veterans, Filipino guerrillas and ex-internees. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
