Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Saga of Robert Preston Taylor, a missionary preacher who joined the US Army reserves. He was called to active duty and sent to the Philippines, where, as a lieutenant in the US Army Chaplains' Service, he was made regimental chaplain of the 31st Infantry Regiment (US). He preached to the various units of the regiment before and during the war, visiting troops in the front lines. When the surrender came, he was treated as badly as the ordinary soldiers, being made to participate in part of the Death March, tend to the dying in the hospital, brought by truck to Bilibid Prison but then taken to Cabanatuan where he had to endure the inhuman conditions there. He was taken to Japan on the infamous Oryoku Maru, which was sunk by US planes in Subic Bay. From Japan he was taken to Manchuria, where he was liberated by the Russians. All throughout prison camp, he provided spiritual strength to his fellow POWs, administering the last rites and kept hope up in the men. In 1962, he was appointed US Air Force Chief of Chaplains with the rank of Brigadier General; he retired as a Major General in the Chaplains' Service. Contains a number of factual errors. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
