Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of an American wife whose husband had been stationed in Hong Kong as representative of International Harvester Company in China prior to the war. With the worsening conditions in China due to war with Japan, the couple returned to the US, only to return to Asia because a company representative was needed in Burma. Mrs. Van Sickle was permitted by the US State Department to go only as far as Manila, and thus were caught there when the war began. In a detailed narrative, Mrs. Van Sickle recounts the shock of war, the arrival of the Japanese, and internment in Santo Tomas. She speaks of daily life, persons she met in camp, living conditions and other details of internment, climaxing with the return of American planes over the Philippines and liberation in February 1945. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
