Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account by a U.S. Navy dental officer with the US Asiatic Fleet. In the Navy Hospital at CaƱacao, Cavite, when the war broke out, Smith and his fellow navy doctors were ordered to Sternberg Hospital in Manila, later tending to war casualties in Santa Scholastica College. Not receiving any orders to leave the city, Smith was taken prisoner when the Japanese took over the capital city in January 1942. He recounts his experiences as a doctor prisoner of war, first at the Pasay Elementary School, then Bilibid Prison, Cabanatuan, hell ship to Japan, and finally Kobe. The original manuscript was written several years earlier, and was edited and annotated by Smith's son. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
