Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Important and definitive book on the prison camp at Camp O'Donnell, in Capas, Tarlac. This was the camp where the defenders of Bataan and Corregidor were incarcerated with the Filipinos separate from Americans. Thousands died due to disease and malnutrition, since food and medicine were in very short supply. Olson was an officer who had fought with the Philippine Scouts in Bataan; in prison camp, he served as personnel officer for the American side of the camp and kept detailed records, which he managed to conceal from the Japanese. These records give detailed information on death rates, camp activities and the like. Rosters and other documentary evidence are provided, resulting in an objective narration of the camp's history. Subtitle on cover: "Extermination camp of American hostages in the Philippines." The title likens O'Donnell to an infamous prisoner of war camp in the U.S. during the civil war. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
