Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Important personal account of an American intelligence operative sent by submarine to Samar in 1943. Stahl was in his early 20s when he volunteered for service with the US Army; he was sent to Brisbane, Australia, and was assigned to the 978th Signal Service Company of the Allied Intelligence Bureau (AIB). The AIB was MacArthur's intelligence organization to bring agents into Japanese occupied areas and consolidate intelligence received. He provides an insight into the AIB's officers and operations, and his own experiences as an intelligence operative with Maj. Charles M. Smith's team ordered to cover Samar and the Bondoc Peninsula. Before he left Australia, MacArthur admonished him to stay alive, since he would be of no use dead (hence the title). First-person account of evading the Japanese while linking up with Filipino guerrillas and obtaining military intelligence, as well as radioing it to MacArthur's headquarters. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
