| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - The story of Richard S. Sakakida, Hawaiian Nisei (American of Japanese descent) who was drafted into the US Army's top secret intelligence service (the Corps of Intelligence Police) and sent to the Philippines to penetrate the Japanese community in Manila. As a spy, he succeeded in obtaining information on Japanese agents and their activities. When the war broke out, he was active in Bataan and Corregidor translating captured Japanese documents and interrogating prisoners of war together with other Nisei. He remained in Corregidor until its fall in May 1942, and became a Japanese prisoner. He convinced the Japanese intelligence officers that he had been forced to serve the Americans, and was eventually made to work as interpreter for Japanese trials of suspected guerrillas. He witnessed the executions of several top guerrillas. Sakakida claimed that he smuggled intelligence information to Fil-American guerrillas, and also that he was instrumental in the August 1944 guerrilla jailbreak in Muntinglupa. He was taken with the withdrawing Japanese forces to Northern Luzon, where he managed to escape and cross to American lines, where he told intelligence agents what he knew. This book was written by Wayne S. Kiyosaki, Sakakida's brother in law, based mainly on what Sakakida told him; it is told with Sakakida in the first person, like a memoir. While short accounts on Sakakida had been published earlier this is the first book length treatment from Sakakida's own words. His versions of some key events, such as the Muntinglupa jailbreak, however, do not jibe with other eyewitness accounts and are difficult to corroborate. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
