Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Researched biography of Charles "Chick" Parsons, American intelligence agent and coordinator of supply missions to the guerrillas in the Japanese-held Philippines. Parsons came to the Philippines in the 1920s, rose to become "boss stevedore" of the Luzon Stevedoring Company. Quirino narrates Parsons' tale during the war - a story already previously told by two books (those by Ingham, "Rendezvous by Submarine," and Wise, "Secret Mission to the Philippines"), which Quirino relies on heavily (large portions are paraphrases from these, and two or three other basic works on MacArthur and the guerrillas). Quirino, a Filipino historian, knew Parsons personally but did not make the best use of his friendship with the man he wrote about. Reprints Parsons' June 1943 report on conditions in the Philippine Islands (already published in Willoughby's "Guerrilla Resistance Movement in the Philippines"); additional appendices are the citation of Parsons' Medal of Valor from the Philippine government and a letter from Parsons to Col. Macario Peralta, guerrilla commander in Panay. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
