| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Vivid personal account of perhaps the youngest American soldier on Bataan. Lying about his age, he enlisted in the US Army at the tender age of 14, but with much experience in hard work. Arriving in the Philippines shortly after his basic training, he was assigned to the 31st Infantry (US Army) in Manila. He narrates his life as a young soldier, his adventures in Manila before the war, and combat on Bataan. He and his buddies escaped to Corregidor when Bataan fell, but was taken prisoner by the Japanese when Corregidor surrendered. As a prisoner of war, he spent time in Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, the Nichols Field detail. He survived the infamous Oryoku Maru hellship, and labored in Japanese coal mines before he was liberated. When the war ended, he was only nineteen years old; he continued to serve in the US Army until retirement. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
