Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of a member of the ground crew of the 14th Bomb Squadron, equipped with B-17 bombers. Zincke arrived by ship in the Philippines on September 1941, was at Clark when the Japanese bombed it, and then was sent to Del Monte Field in Mindanao to service the remaining bombers and await new ones. Since there was little air activity by then, he and his friends were moved from place to place, attempted to salvage the PBY flying boat which had struck an obstruction in Lake Lanao, and performed other activities. He and his friends were later assigned to Gen. Fort's command to serve as infantry, but by then they received orders to surrender. He narrates his unique experiences as a POW in Mindanao - the death march from Camp Keithley to Iligan, POW camp in Malaylabay; POW ship (in late 1942) for Japan; POW Camp No. 2 in Kawasaki, where he was forced to work for the Mitsui Company until 1945. Bombed by B-29 raids, Zincke was forced to move to various other camps until the end of the war. Based on his secret wartime diaries and post-war readings, aside from his own recollections. The book provides a list of prisoners in his camp (with him were British and other Allied POWs, as well as some Javanese), and the names of the Japanese who tormented them. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
