| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Personal account of an American girl and her family in northern Mindanao during the war. The author was seven years old at the time, but has filled in details from her mother's diary, her father's letters and conversations with guerrilla leaders, submariners and other survivors. Her father was a mining engineer at the Mother Lode Mine in Surigao (Gen. MacArthur had stocks in this mine), and worked with the USAFFE in trying to provide for the defense of Mindanao. With the surrender of the USAFFE in May 1942, the McKay family, together with several other Americans escaped to the mountains, preferring the difficulties there rather than internment by the Japanese. The author's father assisted the guerrillas who in turn helped the family. Because of the ever-present danger of Japanese capture, the family was evacuated by the submarine Narwhal in November 1943. Through this memoir, the author depicts life in the mountains and its dangers, and also growing up and loyal friends. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
