General Note
  • General note - Autobiographical. The story of an American family in hiding in the forests of the Philippines for 26 months and successfully evading capture by the Japanese. - Roderick Hall
Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account by an American Protestant minister and his family caught by the war in Negros Oriental. McKinley was dean of the College of Theology at Silliman University in Dumaguete when the war broke out. He and most other American faculty members evacuated to the hills to escape the Japanese. Their Filipino host, grew resentful and betrayed them to the Japanese. Rather than yield to the Japanese, the McKinleys chose to go deeper into the mountains, remaining one step ahead of the searching Japanese. In the course of moving, the family was befriended by scores of Filipinos, who kept them safe. After 26 months of living in the mountains, the McKinleys were evacuated to Australia by submarine. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
