Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of a Jesuit priest and teacher in Mindanao during the war. Father Haggerty was parish priest of Cagayan de Oro and Rector of the Ateneo de Cagayan (now Xavier University) when World War II broke out. Rather than subjecting himself to the Japanese invaders, he joined the guerrillas where he became Chaplain of the 10th Military District. Haggerty details his experiences in Cagayan de Oro at the start of the war; trying to build up morale through the school newspaper; the Japanese invasion and occupation of Cagayan; the decision by many Filipinos to resist the Japanese; his joining the guerrillas. As chaplain for the guerrillas he narrowly escaped capture by the Japanese numerous times. After the war, Haggerty remained active in Jesuit activities in the Philippines until his death in 1963. Published in 1946, Haggerty's memoir was one of the first to speak highly of Filipinos in the resistance movement. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
