Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal memoir of an American born newspaperwoman who became a leading member of the Markings Guerrillas. An undercover agent of the US Army who had married - but separated from - a Filipino mining engineer, she was ordered to remain in Japanese-occupied Manila and provide intelligence on Japanese forces. Because the Japanese suspected her, she fled Manila and was found by members of the Markings group. Brought to the group's leader, Marcos Agustin a.k.a. Marking, she became a co-leader of the movement, providing much direction and inspiration. Panlilio was better known as "Colonel Yay" and she writes of the troubles, successes, losses and triumphs she and her friends faced, among them notable writers like Manuel and Lydia Arguilla, intensely personal and very effectively written in describing life as a guerrilla leader in the Southern Tagalog area. She and Marking fell in love and married (in Mexico); the book ends at this point. (The two later separated, Yay remaining a journalist). The title of the book comes from a quote from free civil government leader Tomas Confesor, depicting the war as the crucible "to test the metal of our being." - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
