Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Biography of Rafael R. "Liling" Roces, a gifted journalist and writer, nationalist and World War II hero. Liling wrote a regular column in the Tribune, but refused to write for the paper under the Japanese. Instead, he helped found the Free Philippines underground group, which circulated anti-Japanese leaflets in Manila. Eventually, the Japanese arrested him and members of his group. He was subjected to torture in Fort Santiago and was beheaded in the Chinese Cemetery. After the war, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom by the US government, the highest award it could bestow on a civilian. The author, Liling's brother, sought to recover his brother from anonymity and to preserve his legacy, through archival research and videotaped interviews with key persons who knew Liling. This book is a biography of a Filipino World War II martyr, and also a chronicle of the author's quest to bring his brother back to life. Much of it is told in the actual words of eyewitnesses. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
