Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Written by a Filipino journalist right after the war, this book is a record of collaboration in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation and the postwar betrayal by Filipino "collaborator" politicians led by Manuel A. Roxas. Abaya was employed in Malacañang during the Japanese occupation, but was actively involved in the guerrilla resistance movement. He reports the selfish motives of Vargas, Laurel and other Filipinos who collaborated with the Japanese (without much documentation) and criticizes MacArthur's stance on Roxas in 1945; he laments the return of the "collaborators" to power right after the Japanese were defeated. He further writes about other collaborators - those in the army and economic collaborators. He analyzes the political scene just on the eve of independence, criticizes American policy towards the Philippine Commonwealth, and observes that Americans and Filipinos in power did not try to solve deeper social and agrarian problems, thus setting the stage for civil strife. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
