| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - A very personal account of the war experienced by a young wife and mother. The husband of the former Aurora Lopez Sacro was a reserve Philippine Army officer and was called to active duty in 1941. This book consists of excerpts from her wartime diary, which details her daily life, struggle to survive, worries and fears, and strength. This book starts with Aurora's entry for December 7, 1941, and documents conditions in Laoag as the war starts and the Japanese take over. She is separated from her husband, who is sent to Bataan; he later surreptitiously returns to Laoag, joins the guerrillas and urges his wife and family to evacuate to the mountains. After moving from place to place, evading Japanese soldiers, she and her family settle in a small village called Bumitalag, where they spend most of the rest of the war. The diary gives interesting details about Roque Ablan, governor of Ilocos Norte and one of the first guerrilla leaders in the Philippines, as well as other local personalities. The diary is also a testament to the strength and selflessness of this resilient woman. Although there is joy with the coming of the Americans and the defeat of the Japanese, tragedy befalls Aurora when her husband dies of cerebral malaria. Several years later, she remarries: her second husband was her husband's wartime buddy (Prudencio Ver). An epilogue details her postwar struggles and triumphs and her children from both marriages. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
