Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Biography of Jose Paciano Laurel, distinguished lawyer and jurist, who became president of the Japanese-sponsored Philippine republic from October 1943-August 1945. It sought to portray Laurel's side while the collaboration trials were going on and was timed for the 1949 presidential elections, where Laurel ran against incumbent president Quirino. Laurel's experiences as a boy growing up in Batangas during the Fil-American War (his father was a member of the Malolos Congress and was arrested by the occupying Americans), his schooling in the US, political career before the war (he was a member of the 1935 Constitutional Convention and became Supreme Court justice) are narrated briefly. The focus is on Laurel's activities during the Japanese occupation, as Commissioner of Justice and later president, and the authors highlight his resistance against the Japanese rulers, seeking to protect his people. The book looks into Laurel's efforts to frustrate the Japanese in MalacaƱang, protecting Roxas and others from the kempeitai, declaring a state of war against the US but rendering it toothless, rebuffing the Makapili, and other actions against the Japanese. It also dwells on the collaboration case against Laurel after the war, and Laurel's defense. Includes some bits of the authors' experiences during the occupation. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
