Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Virginia Hansen Holmes' father, Charles Hansen, was the plant superintendent of the East Mindanao Mining Company in Surigao. With him, Virginia, her mother and three siblings, lived as a happy American family before the war. Virginia was nine days short of seven years when the war started. Her father joined the Visayas Mindanao Force of the USAFFE to aid in the defense of the Philippines. After Corregidor surrendered, he chose to join the guerrillas rather than give up to the Japanese; his sons joined him, and his family went up to the mountains to remain out of Japanese hands. This book is more than just a personal memoir - it tells of the whole family during the war, buttressed by research and communication with other guerrillas who served with them. It is a unique book which documents the human side of the American guerrillas in Northern Mindanao. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
