| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - A compilation of columns written for the "Philippines Free Press" and the defunct "Manila Meteor" written and published in 2002 and 2003, focusing on World War II and the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, particularly in 1942. Very important for providing a much needed Filipino perspective. Legarda wrote these pieces to keep the memories of the war alive, since much of the early war events (such as the horrors of Capas for Filipinos, and the aftermath for the Filipino prisoners of war following their release) were either forgotten or not taught. They were written in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of World War II. Many of these columns - particularly those that deal with life in Manila at that time - draw on Legarda's own experiences, having lived through the war in Manila, or on his father's diaries and other papers. On larger historical episodes such as Bataan and Corregidor, he draws on published works but makes them easier for the general public to understand. A few columns deal with events that took place later (the Kamikaze, the raid on Cabanatuan, the Liberation of Manila and others); he is particularly bitter towards the Japanese and Philippine governments for forgetting the atrocities of February 1945 and instead foisting a "Philippine-Japan Friendship Month." Legarda is a Filipino from a prestigious family, trained in the Philippines and the U.S. as a banker, an economist and a historian (A companion volume, "Occupation: The Later Years," was published in 2007). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
