Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - A novel of life under the Japanese occupation in Manila and Central Luzon, reflecting the author's own experiences growing up in Manila at that time. Local color is quite accurate, with Tagalog and Spanish words interspersed in the dialogue. The heroine in the story, like the author, is a mestiza (born of an American father and Spanish mother, growing up under a Swiss foster father and her mother) coming of age in a time of war. Not interned, she observes life under Japanese rule, meets internees from Santo Tomas and guerrillas. The novel is based on diaries which the author kept. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
