Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Local history by a Dominican priest of the northernmost islands of the Philippines. Focusing on the unique culture of the region as well as the evangelical work of Catholic missionaries, the book devotes one chapter (Chapter XXIII, pp. 77-82) on the four years of Japanese rule. The Batanes Islands were seized without warning by the Japanese on the first day of the war, and were cut off from the rest of the Philippines. While Japanese rule was harsh, there was no food shortage in the islands because the residents cultivated all available land. Some atrocities occurred towards the end of the war, when American pilots whose planes were shot down were captured and executed by the Japanese; the Japanese garrison also executed several suspected guerrillas who captured a Japanese ship which ran aground. As with the rest of the Philippines, the Batanes Island suffered much physical damage from the war. The author was himself a young priest at the time and was an eyewitness to what he writes. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
