Summary, Etc.
  • Expansion of summary note - These two imposing volumes comprise the best and most comprehensive bibliography of books, periodical articles, thesis and dissertations, unit histories and propaganda materials for the time period it covers. Includes works published during the war and until 1994. It is a much expanded revision of the earlier bibliography published by Cornell University in 1977. "Jock" as he was better known was born and raised in the Philippines; he was, however, in the US when war broke out. Out of touch with his parents and friends (his parents were interned by the Japanese; his brother volunteered to fight in Bataan, was taken prisoner and died of disease), he collected everything he could on the Philippines. After the war, he opened a bookshop specializing in Filipiniana, also expanding his own personal collection. His knowledge of the Philippines, key Filipino leaders, and books made him the best qualified person to compile this bibliography, with most titles annotated by either himself or other old Philippine hands like James Halsema and other Philippine specialists. It was his obsession to complete this bibliography; unfortunately he passed away before it could be published. His widow took it upon herself to publish the book as Jock would have wanted it. Indispensable to researchers, who have to begin any work on World War II in the Philippines by consulting these volumes. Volume I covers authors' names beginning in A to L; Volume II continues with M-Z and numbers (particularly useful for finding numbered military units). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
