Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Detailed reconstruction of life in Malate during the Japanese occupation, focusing on the Remedios Hospital put up in the Malate Catholic School. Originally set up as an emergency hospital by the Red Cross at the start of the war, the Remedios Hospital continued to function through the dedicated efforts of the Catholic Women's League and the Volunteer Social Action Committee (VSAC). It tended sick internees from Santo Tomas Internment Camp, some released prisoners of war, and played a sterling role in tending the sick and wounded during the Battle for Manila in 1945. Unfortunately, the hospital was hit by American shells, causing frightful death and destruction. The author was one of the volunteers who worked in the hospital and saw its destruction; he interweaves his own memories with patient research in this labor of love. Appendices provide several personal accounts written just after the war, reports and a partial list of volunteers and Allied internee patients. A detailed map is also included. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
